How we breed
Fourteen years, four generations, and a protocol we do not bend. This page is the argument; the dogs' records are the evidence.

Where two rivers meet
Twin River Labradors is a family program in Rock Island, Tennessee, where the Caney Fork and the Collins meet. We started in 2014 with one imported bitch and a plan we have not materially changed since.
The word that matters is bloodline. We did not buy two dogs and sell their puppies. We have kept the best bitch from most litters, health-tested her, proven her, and bred forward — 3 generations of our own breeding so far. The dogs in the program today are the result of decisions made a decade ago, and the decisions we make this year are for dogs that will not be born until 2030.
We whelp a small number of litters. That is not modesty, it is arithmetic: you cannot know twenty puppies the way you can know seven, and we will not place a dog we do not know.
The protocolSix rules we don't bend
- 01
Nothing is bred before two
OFA will not certify hips or elbows before 24 months, so no dog of ours is bred before it is cleared. There are no exceptions and there is no rush.

Six tests, every dog, every time
Hips, elbows, eyes, EIC, PRA-PRCD and CNM. Both parents, before every breeding, results published on the dog's page whether or not they flatter us.
- 03
One or two litters a year
A bitch is bred twice in her life and retired at six. She stays in the house afterwards. We have turned down more stud inquiries than we have accepted.

Raised underfoot, not in a barn
Puppies are whelped in the house and spend eight weeks being walked over, vacuumed around and handled by our grandchildren. Early neurological stimulation from day three.

We choose the family, not the check
Applications are approved on fit, not on order of arrival. We have refused people who were ready to pay in full, and we will do it again.
- 06
The dog comes back if it must
Every contract says it: at any age, for any reason, the dog comes back to us rather than to a shelter. Four have, in fourteen years.
Why the LabradorBench type, not field type
Built to the standard
Labradors bred to the standard keep the original conformation — broad skull, deep chest, short coupling, thick otter tail. It is what the standard describes, and it is what we breed to.
An off switch
Selected for conformation and temperament rather than field-trial drive, These dogs settle in the home. Ours are under the kitchen table by seven. American field lines are superb dogs; they are a different job.
Bred for a purpose
The purpose here is a family companion that stays sound to twelve. Every pairing is chosen for health first, temperament second, type third — in that order, and we do not reorder it for a pretty head.
